Bobby Gentry est l’une des premières artistes féminines de la scène Country à composer et produire sa propre musique. Sa carrière a débuté grâce au hit Ode to Billie Joe, réadapté plus tard en français sous le titre Marie-Jeanne, popularisé par Eddy Mitchell et Joe Dassin :
